“Live and practice on the mat that which you want to manifest in life.”
Students new to Barbara’s classes will find themselves charmed one minute by a lighthearted Southern Belle and challenged the next by a spirited yoga-athlete whose disciplined style and demanding pace inspire new and lifelong yogis alike.
A cornbread-and-grits-loving Birmingham, Alabama native, Barbara graduated from Auburn University and served in the U.S. Coast Guard’s elite Heavy Surf/Motor Lifeboat Rescue Unit. After sustaining a serious injury while on patrol in the Bering Sea, she approached yoga in an attempt to restore her body.
In 2002 after many years of dedicated yoga practice, Barbara’s instructor Clayton Horton at Greenpath Yoga (Ashtanga/8 Limbs) in San Francisco invited her to train and eventually become an instructor herself. She received her initial certification at Greenpath and went on to become certified in PreNatal and Children’s Yoga as well.
Aside from the healing that originally brought her to yoga, Barbara also describes the joy.
“I have a tremendous sense of gratitude for every aspect of what yoga brings to me and my students. I’ve learned to be a focused observer. By learning more about myself through my own practice, I am better able to connect with the world around me.”
Barbara says her first job is ‘mom’ to her cute middle-school daughter, and she looks close to home in naming her husband, daughter, students and peers as the greatest influences on her as a yoga instructor.
“The greatest compliments I get are from students who tell me I’ve inspired them to teach yoga.”
